$9,400 Across 11 Altcoins Taught Me the Exit Was Always Fake
My 2021 altcoin basket of Cardano, Solana, DOT and eight others was up big in April and worth nearly nothing by Christmas. The lesson was not diversification. It was that most altcoins have no exit liquidity when you actually need it.
2:10 AM, May 19, 2021, and I am sitting on the floor of my hallway bathroom with my phone, because I did not want to wake my wife watching a candle chart that read -41% on Solana in six hours. Downstairs the printer hummed. $9,437 total across eleven positions. That number, at 2 AM, felt like a lottery ticket mid-tear.
Here is what stood to be lost beyond the money itself. We had closed on our house in March, and the moving company invoice for $2,850 hit June 1st. In my head the altcoins were "bonus money" for exactly these gaps. In reality I had routed the household buffer thru assets that could halve between dinner and breakfast, which they demonstrated live while my cat scratched at the bathroom door.
And the thing nobody tells you in advance: on those red nights there was nothin to actually do. Selling meant realizing a panic price into thin books. Holding meant trusting project roadmaps written like fan fiction. Either way the choice happened at 2 AM with sweaty hands, which is where this entire asset class does its real teaching.
eleven coins wearing eleven costumes
I spread $9,400 across Cardano, Polkadot, Algorand, Vechain, Litecoin, Dogecoin, XLM, Ethereum Classic, and a few others whose names embarrass me mildly now. Eleven positions sounds diversified. It was one position wearing eleven costumes, cuz all of them moved together, down, whenever Bitcoin sneezed. Correlation during crashes runs near 0.9 across alts. You own beta, full stop. Real diversification would have meant some allocation that does not worship the same king — bonds, cash, anything boring — but "boring" was an insult back then.
the screenshot from May 12th
April had been glorious. The whole basket printed +$6,100 above cost at the local peak around May 12th. I screenshotted the portfolio page and sent it to my brother-in-law with a rocket emoji, which remains among my top five most embarrassing digital artifacts. Peak confidence. Photographed, timestamped, uploaded to the cloud where regret can never quite delete it.
the night bids evaporated
Then came the specific night everyone remembers, when a single Chinese regulatory headline plus leveraged liquidations erased hundreds of billions across hours. My limit sell orders on Vechain sat unfilled through a -35% move cuz bids evaporated. Slippage on small-cap pairs ran 5-8% if you used market orders. So much for "I'll just sell when it drops." Selling requires a buyer. At 2:45 AM there were no buyers, only sellers queued politely in front of each other like a bank run choreographed worldwide simultaneously.
That is the core defect I paid $9,437 to learn, tho it cost less than the tuition feel suggested by year-end: altcoins without real usage are exit games where your profit requires a later stranger's loss, and strangers get scarce precisely when you need them.
September gave it back, almost
The cruel structure of that bear market deserves its own paragraph. By September the basket recovered to approximately -8% from cost, close enough to scratch free. I held, evidently, cuz September me believed the December me who believed the April me. Getting out at break-even felt like failure. Staying cost triple.
the second act nobody priced
By late November the whole complex had rolled over again, harder. My final exits scattered from December 2021 through March 2022 grasped about $3,900 back against $9,437 in, a -59% experience dressed as many modest decisions, none cinematic enough to feel like surrender at the time.
Solana, ironically, roared back eventually and made new highs years later. Two or three of the others never recovered meaningfully and drift today as zombie tickers with Discord servers of the loyal and the broke. Survivorship bias works backwards too: for every Solana resurrection story there are ten protocols whose communities now argue about marketing budgets rather than throughput.
what stayed after the wreckage
By summer 2022 my remaining crypto exposure, mayb $6,800 in BTC and ETH only, moved onto two hardware wallets and stopped being traded entirely. Annualized since purchase, those two dull coins outperformed my whole clever eleven-coin basket by a margin I refuse to compute precisely, cuz precision here is just self-harm with decimals.
I rebuilt the emergency fund properly next — six months of expenses parked dull and insured. When our water heater failed that November ($1,850 installed), nothin crashed overnight to pay for it. Nothing needed to. A savings account just... worked. Two in the morning and everythin quiet. Do you know how boringly beautiful that is after one winter of candles?
the unexploded souvenir
My wife found the rocket emoji screenshot recently in a shared album, dated May 12th, 2021, glowing beside actual family photos, and asked whatever happened to that app. Deleted in March 2022, I told her, mid-sentence of a Tuesday. She said good. She was right at the time, in every way that counted, asleep upstairs while the market taught its class.
Sometimes, walking past that hallway bathroom, I remember the tile floor's chill and the phone screen's glow showing minus signs multiplying. People ask whether altcoins can still work. Sure, occasionally, briefly, for someone. But there exists no version of advice where I tell another person to route rent-gap money thru charts that gap 40% overnight with bids missing, so the honest answer stays no.
